Macclesfield Old Road, Buxton

This project transforms a traditional semi-detached house in Buxton through a carefully considered single-storey side extension that reimagines the heart of the home. The client’s brief was to open up and enlarge the existing kitchen, creating a brighter, more connected space for everyday living while maintaining a practical layout that supports family life.

The design extends the kitchen along the full depth of the house to the front elevation, forming a generous galley arrangement that improves circulation and visual flow. Within this linear plan, a discreet WC and pantry are thoughtfully integrated, preserving valuable storage and functionality without interrupting the openness of the main space.

A defining feature of the extension is a large rooflight positioned over the rear portion of the new structure. This introduces an abundance of natural light, creating a greenhouse-like atmosphere that changes throughout the day and seasons. The result is a calm, uplifting environment that feels closely connected to the outdoors while remaining comfortable and usable year-round.

The extension respects the scale and character of the existing property while delivering a contemporary, light-filled kitchen space that significantly enhances the quality of daily life.
